Healthy, Happy Halloween Tips and Treats from My Rivertown Dentist

Halloween snacks

There’s so much that our patients (and us) love about October. The fall sweater weather. The pumpkin spice everything. The arrival of Halloween. (It’s the only time of year when you’re allowed to dress up as your favorite superhero or cartoon character, and no one will bat an eyelash. YES!)

We’re partnering with the American Dental Association to remind you of some helpful tricks, so no matter how you and your family choose to celebrate Halloween — it’s a total treat.

Helpful Halloween Safety Reminders

As your Madison dentist, we love to see how the community comes together — especially in celebrations like these. They are so much fun! If you’re going trick or treating or are in charge of taking your little one door to door, don’t forget these helpful safety tips:

  • Always have adults accompany children at all times
  • Consider carrying a flashlight so you can see in the dark
  • Light-colored costumes or reflective tape are always a safe bet
  • Give your treats a look over for any damage before you indulge

Now that you’re all set with safety, have you figured out who or what you’re going to be for Halloween?

Limit Your Sweets to Only a Few Treats

At My Rivertown Dentist, we encourage everyone — kids and adults alike — to celebrate Halloween in a way that makes you feel most comfortable. Remember that certain treats are better for your teeth than others. Choose your candy carefully! Be on the lookout for treats that can stay in your mouth for a longer period of time. Unless your candy is free from sugar, sweets that linger are often subject our smiles to the harmful risk of tooth decay. (Sorry to all you taffy-loves and gummy bear gurus out there!)

Suppose you or someone in your family is currently undergoing orthodontic treatment with traditional-style braces. In that case, you must watch what you eat on Halloween and every day, for that matter. Try choosing:

  • Soft chocolates and candies that melt quickly in your mouth
  • Peanut butter cups
  • Milkshakes
  • Jello
  • Thinly sliced apples
  • Ice cream

Try to avoid snacks that are hard, crunchy, or too sticky such as:

  • Bubblegum
  • Caramel
  • Nuts
  • Licorice
  • Jawbreakers
  • Lollipops

Don’t forget to brush and floss your teeth after you enjoy some Halloween candy and treats. Remember to come to My Rivertown Dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning. While you’re at it, check with us to see when you’re due for your next appointment.

These visits allow us to detect any concerns like cavities, gum disease, or oral cancer early when they’re still easily treatable. From general dentistry to one-of-a-sleep apnea assessment in adults and kids, My Rivertown Dentist has your oral health covered that truly spans from head to toe. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Ashley Lee and her partnership with The Institute for Craniofacial Medicine, we can even see beyond routine smile care for our patients using special oral appliances created by Vivos Therapeutics to help guide jaw development.
